The Texoma Area Solid Waste Authority landfill sits on State Highway 56 west of Whitesboro, in Grayson County. TASWA was formed in 2000 by the cities of Denison, Gainesville and Sherman together with Cooke and Grayson counties, and it runs a Type I municipal solid waste landfill for its member communities and the wider Texoma region. A citizens convenience centre on the same site handles non-automated customers, which in practice means anyone arriving with a pickup or a trailer rather than a collection truck.
Gates open at 7am on weekdays and close at 4:30pm, with Saturday running 7am until 1pm. The authority is strict about that closing time: customers must be finished unloading, paid and out through the gate by then, not merely arriving. The scale house number is (903) 564-1290 and the office is (903) 564-4749. On icy or hazardous days it is worth ringing the scale house first.
On the rate sheet effective 1 January 2024, residential or commercial waste, compacted or uncompacted, is $45.00 a ton, with a $45.00 minimum charge for facility use. Refrigerators and air conditioners are $10.00 each if the refrigerant has been removed and certified, and $25.00 each if not. Tyres are capped at four per visit of any size: car, pickup or trailer tyres up to 33 inches are $5.00 each, or $11.00 on the rim, and large tyres from 34 to 44 inches are $11.00 each with no rims. Tyres over 44 inches are refused outright. A pull-out fee of $8.00 applies where staff have to remove tyres or appliances for you.
Three surcharges catch people out. An uncovered load is $20.00. An official scale weight costs $13.00. And a $20.00 cleanup fee is charged if you leave a mess behind at the convenience centre. Used motor oil and filters go in separate containers free of charge, up to three gallons for individual use. The scale house takes cash, cheques and cards alike. Note that TASWA has since posted a revised rate sheet dated 1 January 2025 as a scanned image we cannot read, so confirm the current tonnage rate at the scale house.
