The Grand Prairie recycling drop-off container at the Chamber of Commerce, 900 Conover Drive, is one of six unstaffed sites the city provides for residents who generate more recycling than their kerbside cart holds, or who live in flats and multi-family buildings with no recycling service.
There is no charge to use it and no residency check at the container, but there is one restriction that catches people out: glass is not accepted at this location. The Conover Drive container takes paper, cardboard, metal, and plastic bottles and containers only. Cardboard must be flattened before it goes in. If you have glass bottles or jars to recycle, they need to go to the landfill instead.
The other five drop-off containers on the same terms are at the Charles V. England Public Safety Training Building on College Street, the Prairie Paws Animal Adoption Center on West Warrior Trail, the Main Library at 901 Conover Drive, Tangle Ridge Golf Course and Prairie Lakes Golf Course. All of them exclude glass.
The convenience area at the Grand Prairie Landfill, 1102 MacArthur Boulevard, is the site that accepts everything, glass included — anything taken in the kerbside programme is taken there for recycling. Grand Prairie residents, though not businesses, can also recycle electronics free of charge at the landfill or at one of the city's free collection events. The landfill is open Monday to Saturday from 7:30am to 4:30pm, and closes early at 3pm on the last Thursday of every month. For recycling questions the department can be reached on (972) 237-8151.
