The Edinburg Recycling & Educational Center at 3102 South US-281 Business is a drive-thru drop-off run by the city's Department of Solid Waste Management. You stay in your vehicle, hand sorted material to staff and leave. It is a recycling point, not a disposal site, and the difference matters before you load up.
One correction worth stating plainly: this centre does not take tyres. The city's own approved-items list carries an explicit note to that effect. Anyone arriving with a boot full of old tyres will be turned away, and they belong instead at the city landfill described below.
What the centre does accept is a wider list than most: aluminium, steel and tin cans, left unflattened with labels still on; plastics marked #1 PETE and #2 HDPE, emptied and rinsed; corrugated cardboard and press-board; black-and-white newsprint with all its inserts; magazines free of plastic wrap, catalogues and paperback books; white and coloured office or school paper and junk mail without wax markings.
Two items here that a landfill will refuse: used motor oil, provided it is free of water and debris, and lead-acid batteries. Clear and coloured glass is taken as well.
Refused alongside tyres: paint of any kind, windscreen glass, mirrors, light bulbs, pottery, ceramics, candle jars, waxed cardboard and foam packaging.
It opens seven days a week, running 8am until 6.30pm on weekdays and 8am until 5pm at weekends, with observed holidays excepted. Ring (956) 292-2133.
Household rubbish, brush, appliances and tyres go instead to the Edinburg Regional Disposal Facility at 8601 North Jasman Road, where city residents dump their own household waste at no cost on production of a photo ID and a utility bill showing city garbage services are paid. Four passenger tyres a year are free there, then $5.00 each.
