Dimmitt's landfill is not at the city offices on East Jones Street where many directories place it. The City of Dimmitt states that the site, permitted as Municipal Solid Waste No. 445A, is a mile east of U.S. Highway 385 at 1450 County Road 513, out in the farmland east of town in Castro County. It is owned and operated directly by the city.
For people who live in Dimmitt the headline is simple: there is no charge at all, except for tyres. That makes it one of the very few landfills in the Texas Panhandle where a resident can clear a house or a yard without paying anything at the gate. The one universal penalty is an unsecured load, which costs $25.00 regardless of who you are, so tarp the trailer before you set out.
Contractors working inside the city and residents of the wider Castro County pay by the ton, and the schedule distinguishes carefully between materials. Building debris, railroad ties, fencing, shingles, pallets and tree limbs are all $36.00 a ton. Concrete and brick are far cheaper at $7.00 a ton, as are asphalt, reclaimed asphalt pavement and stone. Cold mix is priced by weight at $0.35 a pound. Tree stumps over twelve inches in diameter cost $67.00 a ton, halving to $33.50 if you quarter them yourself before arriving.
Tyres are charged to everyone, including city residents. A passenger tyre is $5.00, or $10.00 with the rim still on; truck tyres are $8.00 and $28.00 respectively; tractor tyres are $30.00 and sprinkler tyres $10.00. Dead farm animals cost $25.00 each, while dogs and cats are accepted free of charge and there is no fee for veterinary practices. The landfill also sells dirt at $12.00 a yard loaded. The city does not publish landfill gate hours, so telephone 806-647-2155 before travelling.
