The City of Midland Landfill sits out on Garden City Highway, several miles east of town, and is run by the city's Solid Waste Division rather than a contractor. It is the destination for loads the Citizens Collection Station on Smith Road will not take, including anything generated commercially.
The honest position on price: Midland does not publish a gate rate per ton on its landfill page. A figure appears in the city code, but the city does not carry it on the live page a member of the public would read, and it has been subject to annual escalation for years. Rather than quote a number that may no longer hold, ring the gate before you load.
Two charges the city does publish are firm. Any vehicle entering without a valid permit pays a $25.00 landfill access fee on top of whatever the load itself costs. That fee applies each time the vehicle enters, so a job needing three trips carries it three times.
The way around it is a Garbage Hauler's Permit at $500.00 per year per vehicle, which waives the access fee entirely. Applications go to the Director of Solid Waste with proof of insurance and the fee, vehicles are inspected, and an approved permit comes as a decal displayed on the vehicle. Permits run the calendar year and are handled at the Solid Waste office, 600 North Carver Street.
Payment at the landfill is by card, cash or cheque — unusually flexible for a municipal site.
Two cautions. City pages give the address as both 7901 East and 7904 South Garden City Highway, and quote closing times of both 4.00 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. on weekdays. Ring (432) 685-3431 and confirm both before setting out.
