Environmental Service Center South, at 11500 South Post Oak Road, is the more usable of Houston's two household hazardous waste depots, and for most residents it is the one worth driving to.

It opens Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, from eight until five. Note the gap in the middle of that list: Thursday is not a service day here, and neither is Monday or Sunday. The Saturday opening matters, since it is the only weekend slot the city offers for hazardous material anywhere.

Compare that with ESC North on Neches Street, which opens for six hours on a single Thursday each month. Same service, same city, wildly different access.

This is a drive-through operation for City of Houston residents, free of charge. The material it exists to take is what the rest of the waste system refuses: paint and stains, thinners and strippers, motor oil and antifreeze, brake fluid, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, household cleaners, aerosols, batteries of every kind, fluorescent tubes and electronic scrap.

Documentation follows the standard city rule for anything other than plain recycling. A current Texas ID plus a current Houston utility bill or lease, with matching addresses on the two. Out-of-state primary residence means a property tax bill in the same name. Recycling-only drop-offs need only the ID.

Quantity ceilings apply to hazardous material and are not published in full, so confirm limits through 311 if you are clearing a garage rather than dropping off a few tins.
