Carthage's transfer station sits at 1540 NE Loop, next door to Tyson Foods, and is operated by the City of Carthage under a long-standing agreement with Panola County. That arrangement is currently in flux, and anyone planning a trip should know why.

In June 2026 the Carthage City Commission approved an amendment barring commercial dumping at the site, citing rising disposal costs and a belief that waste was arriving from outside Panola County. Weeks later, in July, the county commissioners court formally accepted the city's notice terminating the decades-old interlocal agreement that governs the station, opening a ninety-day window for the two governments to negotiate.

Household drop-off by ordinary residents has not been withdrawn. What changed is access for commercial operators, and the position of the private haulers many rural county households depend on remains unsettled — officials have said they are exploring a distinction between large commercial waste companies and small local residential collection firms.

Gate charges are not published by the city. Telephone before loading, and confirm at the same time that the arrangement you are relying on still stands.

Opening hours run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from half past seven in the morning until half past four in the afternoon, with Wednesday operating differently.

Because the governing agreement is under formal termination notice, treat everything about this facility as subject to change through late 2026, and ring ahead every time rather than assuming last month's answer still applies.
