Read this before you set off, because our earlier description of this site was wrong. The working face at Caliche Canyon is closed to the public. Lubbock accepts only small loads of brush at this location, and a household arriving with general rubbish will be turned away at the gate.
General public disposal happens instead at the West Texas Regional Disposal Facility, out at 17304 North FM 2528 in Abernathy. That is a genuine drive north of the city, so factor it in rather than discovering it at the scale house on North Avenue P.
Where charges do apply, the city sets them at thirty-three dollars and ninety-four cents per ton for municipal material generated inside Lubbock. The Abernathy site is dearer, at forty-one dollars and ninety-four cents per ton. Both figures already fold in the state environmental surcharge, so the number quoted is the number owed.
A deposit is taken at check-in before anything is tipped. Three things satisfy it: a credit card, cash, or a Texas driver's licence carrying a Lubbock address. How much is asked depends on how big the load looks, so a laden trailer will be held to more than a half-empty truck bed.
Covering up is not optional. Any vehicle that arrives without a tarp, or without the contents tied down, is charged an extra fifteen dollars on top of whatever the material itself costs.
