The short answer: Houston residents have three free city options — six Neighborhood Depositories (for junk waste, tree waste & recyclables), recycling centers (sorted materials, oil & tires), & two Environmental Service Centers (paint, batteries, chemicals & electronics). City sites are free with proof of residency, up to four visits a month. For heavy mixed loads or construction debris, a private transfer station or landfill that charges by weight is the better fit.
City of Houston Neighborhood Depositories (free)
The six Neighborhood Depository / Recycling Centers let residents drop off junk waste, tree waste & recyclables at no charge. You can use them up to four times a month with proof you’re a Houston resident.

Depository locations include North (9003 N Main), Northwest (14400 Sommermeyer), Northeast (5565 Kirkpatrick), Southeast (2240 Central St), South (5100 Sunbeam) & Southwest (10785 SW Freeway). Good to know:
- They accept recyclables including metals, glass, plastics #1–#5 & #7, plus tree waste, junk waste, mattresses, furniture & appliances.
- Up to five passenger tires per visit, with a ceiling of ten per month. Truck, industrial & tractor-trailer tires are refused.
- Televisions are not taken here — they go to an Environmental Service Center instead.
- Also refused: household garbage, rocks, dirt, bricks & pallets. Contractor-type material is capped at four cubic yards, roughly eight contractor bags.
- Vehicle limits apply. Pickups & small trailers up to 10 ft with sideboards under 4 ft are fine; U-Hauls, box trucks, Sprinter vans, dump trailers & any vehicle towing a loaded trailer alongside a loaded bed are turned away.
- Furniture is limited to two large items per visit, and limbs thicker than nine inches are refused.
Recycling centers
For sorted recyclables — bottles, cans, cardboard & used motor oil — Houston runs standalone recycling centers with far friendlier hours. The Westpark Consumer Recycling Center (5900 Westpark) opens Tuesday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. The Clear Lake / Ellington Airport center (246 Loop Rd) is the most flexible drop-off the city has, open seven days a week, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. — the only site that reliably opens on a Sunday. Kingwood (3210 W Lake Houston Pkwy) opens Saturday & Sunday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Because these handle separated material only, a current Texas ID is all you need at the gate — no utility bill required.
Household hazardous waste & electronics
Paint, oil, antifreeze, batteries, fuel, pesticides, cleaners & residential electronics go to one of the two Environmental Service Centers — North at 5614 Neches St (77026) & South at 11500 S. Post Oak Rd (77035). These are drive-through drop-offs for Houston residents. Check the hours before you drive out: ESC South opens Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., while ESC North opens only on the second Thursday of each month, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. For the full rundown, see our household hazardous waste guide.

What about big or heavy loads?
City depositories are great for household cleanup, but they won’t take general garbage, big construction loads or commercial loads. For those, use a private transfer station or landfill in the Houston area — they charge by weight or vehicle size. Before you go
- For junk or tree waste, bring a Texas ID and a current City of Houston utility bill or lease — the address must match on both. For recycling only, the Texas ID alone is enough.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before closing so you have time to unload — and expect to unload the vehicle yourself, within about 20 minutes.
- Secure & cover your load on the way — it’s required & keeps debris off the road. Loose shingles & leaves must be bagged.
- Children under 16 & pets stay in the vehicle at all times, and salvaging from the containers is not permitted.
