The City of Killeen Transfer Station is out at 12200 State Highway 195, and it runs one of the more generous residential allowances in central Texas — but the allowance is measured in pounds, not visits, so it pays to understand how it works before you load up.

Killeen residential customers get up to 500 pounds of household garbage free every calendar month. You will need a utility bill and photo ID at the scale to claim it. Once you pass 500 pounds, the meter starts: $4.00 per 100 pounds for the remainder. That structure has been in place since 1 October 2025.

Beyond the allowance, residents pay $80.00 per ton — the same $4.00 per 100 pounds expressed the other way round. Non-residents and customers from surrounding rural counties pay $137.60 per ton, or $6.88 per 100 pounds.

An unsecured load carries a $26.25 surcharge. Two refrigerator-type appliances also carry their own cost: air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers and water coolers attract a $21.00 freon fee each.

Household garbage and rubbish, brush, yard waste, grass clippings and leaves, construction and demolition materials, and furniture are all accepted. Cardboard, glass, metal and plastics can be dropped for recycling.

The turn-away list is long and specific: asbestos, batteries of any type, fertilizers, grease, hazardous materials, liquids of any kind including antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline, paint and thinner, medical waste, pesticides, septic tank pumpings, animal carcasses, and TCEQ special waste.
