Garland's C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill is one of the few large metroplex sites where a qualifying household can tip a full pickup load and pay nothing at all. Residents of Garland and Sachse who haul and unload their own domestic waste are not charged, provided the material came from the home where they actually live.

Proof matters here. Staff want a current driver's licence together with a recent City utility bill, and the two need to agree. Turn up without that pairing and the visit stops being free: a minimum charge of fifty dollars applies instead, which is a steep penalty for a forgotten envelope.

There is a third group with access that is easy to miss. Rowlett residents may dispose of debris free of charge twice within any calendar year, but only after collecting a Landfill Pass from the City of Rowlett first. The pass is obtained before the trip, not at the scale house.

Everyone else — non-residents, private waste haulers and anyone carrying commercially generated material — pays a per-ton fee assessed on the weight of the load. That rate is not published on the city's landfill page, so ring ahead if the cost will decide whether the trip happens.

Secure whatever you are carrying. An improperly secured load draws a fifty dollar surcharge under the city's ordinance, and the charge lands regardless of who you are or whether the rest of your visit would have been free.

Bring the paperwork, tie the load down, and this is an unusually cheap disposal option.
