The Town of Pecos City Landfill is on TX-17 about four miles from the centre of Pecos, and it is an arid exempt landfill under TCEQ rules. Two trenches are open. The Type I trench takes household and business refuse; a separate Type IV trench receives construction, demolition and green waste. State rules require the two streams to be kept apart, and the permit caps the site at an average of 20 tons a day per trench.
No gate rate and no opening schedule appear anywhere on the city's landfill page, so anyone planning a trip should ring the site on (432) 447-9133 before loading up. City residents can dispose of either Type I or Type IV waste at current rates on production of a recent utility bill showing an address inside the city limits. The landfill also leases 30-cubic-yard roll-off containers to commercial and residential customers.
The access rules are unusually specific and worth reading before you arrive. No smoking is allowed past the scale house. Every load must be covered and secured at the back with a board or a tailgate. Scavenging is banned. Poles, hoses and pipes of any material must be cut to four feet or shorter, and sheets of plastic pit liner to four feet square. Carpet, flooring and traps must also be cut into four-foot sections. On days that are too muddy, or when wind passes 15mph, commercial waste is turned away entirely. Trailer pull-outs are not offered at all, by city machine or your own.
Since 20 June 2025 the city has refused concrete, asphalt, heavy rocks and bricks at the landfill and in its roll-off containers. Hazardous waste, chemicals, oil filters, herbicides, pesticides, asbestos, medical and radioactive waste, flammable liquids, paint, aerosols, propane tanks, motor and transmission oil, antifreeze, hydraulic oil, lead paint chips, batteries, tyres, computers, animal carcasses, petroleum-contaminated soil and steel-reinforced concrete are all prohibited. Fines for violations run from $500 to $5,000.
