Hereford's city landfill sits at the corner of North Progressive Road and 15th Street, and the first thing to understand about it is what it is not.
This is a Type IV landfill. Under its authorisation it may take brush, construction and demolition waste, and rubbish that is free of putrescible — decomposable — material. In plain terms, household rubbish does not go here. Arriving with bags of kitchen waste means a wasted journey, and this is the most common misunderstanding about the site.
What it will take is the debris from a building job, a fence replacement or a tree clearance. Brush, timber, demolition material and general dry rubbish are its business.
On price, the city publishes one figure clearly: businesses and out-of-city residents pay $10.00 per yard. City residents are told to bring a copy of their current water bill, and no separate resident charge is listed alongside that instruction. We should be straight about the limit of that: the city's own ordinance elsewhere refers to a minimum disposal fee that does not appear on the landfill page. The two do not agree, so treat the resident position as unconfirmed and ask at the gatehouse rather than assume it is free.
Tyres are priced separately and all rates are for tyres with the rim already removed: $3.75 for a passenger car or truck tyre, $14.00 for a semi-truck tyre, and $55.00 for a tractor or sprinkler tyre.
One firm refusal to note: the landfill does not accept refrigerators or anything else containing freon. Those must go to a certified metal recycling facility instead.
