El Campo's Residential Collection Station at 1698 CR 303 runs a two-tier system, and the gap between the tiers is wide enough that it is worth knowing which one you fall into before you set off.
City residents get a generous free allowance. Brush is unlimited at no charge. Bulky materials and trash are free up to six cubic yards — roughly two pickup loads. Beyond that allowance, or for materials outside those categories, the rate is $30 per cubic yard with a $30 minimum. Tyres are charged by size: $10 each for motorcycle tyres and anything under 16 inches, $20 for 20 to 24 inches, $40 for 25 to 28 inches, $60 for 29 to 38 inches and $80 for 39 to 48 inches. Shredded tyres are $60 per cubic yard, and leaving the rim on adds $10 a tyre. Proof of residency is required at the gate, by water bill receipt or valid driver licence.
Customers from outside the city pay considerably more and face a $40 minimum charge. A compact pickup loaded to bed level is $45, a standard pickup $65 and a long bed $75; filled above bed level to the roofline those rise to $75, $100 and $120. Appliances are $50 each, including refrigerators provided the Freon has been removed and the unit properly tagged. A pickup with a trailer, or a load of construction material, is $40 per cubic yard, and asphalt shingles are $100 per cubic yard. Mattresses, box springs, sofas, couches and love seats are $40 each, and a sofa sleeper $60. Clean metal unloaded into the metal container is free. No tyres at all are accepted from outside-city customers.
The prohibited list applies to everyone: rock, dirt, brick, concrete, railroad ties, batteries, hazardous materials, liquids and paint. Brush from outside the city and brush brought by commercial contractors are also refused.
Hours are unusual and catch people out. The station opens Monday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 8am to 5pm, both closed between noon and 1pm for lunch, and Wednesday 8am to noon only. It is closed Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Volumes are calculated as height times width times length in feet, divided by 27.
