The Atascocita Recycling and Disposal Facility, which almost everyone calls the Atascocita Landfill, sits on Wilson Road in Humble and is one of the largest disposal sites in the Houston area - roughly 800 acres, of which about 310 are permitted for waste. It is owned and run by Waste Management of Texas under TCEQ permit, and it takes municipal solid waste, special waste and a range of non-hazardous industrial waste.

We are not going to tell you what it costs, because WM does not publish a gate rate for this site anywhere on its own pages, and a figure copied off a directory would be a guess dressed up as a fact. Ring 281-446-6545, option 3 and ask before you hitch the trailer.

There is a second thing worth knowing before you drive out, and it is the reason we have left the fee fields blank rather than filling them with an estimate. The operating hours WM publishes for Atascocita are explicitly hours for authorised trucks - Monday to Friday around the clock, Saturday closing at 3pm, Sunday opening at 5am. That is a haulier schedule, not a public one. Some WM landfills run a separate residential hand-unload window and say so plainly; the published information for Atascocita does not. We cannot confirm from WM's own material that a private vehicle can simply turn up and unload, so treat casual access as unverified and settle it on the phone.

The site has extracted methane for energy since 2003 and now runs an onsite renewable natural gas plant that fuels WM's CNG collection trucks. WM has been adding gas extraction wells, and its own notice warns nearby residents that odours are possible while that work continues - a fair signal of how active the site is. If you need a confirmed public gate in this corner of Harris County, the county and City of Houston depository network is the safer first call.
