The West Texas Region Disposal Facility on North FM 2528 near Abernathy is the City of Lubbock's main public gate, and it is worth understanding why you end up here rather than at Caliche Canyon. Lubbock runs two landfills, but Caliche Canyon's work face is closed to the public and takes only small loads of brush - it will not take construction and demolition material at all. Everything else goes to the WTRDF, a 1,260-acre site expected to serve the region for the next hundred years.

The rate needs care, because Lubbock's own pages disagree with each other. One city page still shows $40.94 a ton. The figure to trust comes from the adopted ordinance: Lubbock Code section 22.06.051, effective 1 October 2025, sets the charge at $41.00 per ton at landfill 2252 plus applicable state fees and surcharges. With the TCEQ surcharge that is $41.94 per ton, which is what the city's Landfill Disposal page shows. Caliche Canyon, if you qualify to use it, is $33.94. Special waste, including non-friable asbestos, runs to $78.61 a ton and needs prior clearance - ring the Environmental Compliance Specialist before hauling anything of that kind.

Payment is by credit card or cash, or against a driver's licence showing a City of Lubbock address under the landfill policy; a deposit may be taken at the scale house depending on the size of the load. To open a charge account expect a credit check and around thirty days.

Two rules apply to everyone. Loads must be tarped or tied down - the city notes this is a state law requirement rather than a house rule - and every vehicle is subject to random load inspection by Solid Waste Services staff, with refusal to follow directions grounds for denying access. The city also advises arriving an hour before closing; fifteen minutes out, customers are told to wrap up and leave.
