The City of Del Rio Landfill on Railway Avenue is free for residents on household trash and yard rubbish, but the city attaches conditions that catch people out. You need a valid driver's licence and a current utility bill, and the addresses on both must match. Commercial customers are charged regardless of where they live — residency buys you nothing if the load is commercial.

There is one more condition unique to Del Rio: if your city water account is delinquent, you cannot use the landfill until it is brought current. Settle the bill before you load the truck, not at the gate.

Building materials are the paid category. Concrete, asphalt, metal, rock, dirt and renovation or remodel debris are charged at $45.00 per ton. Critically, that rate also applies to building materials *mixed* with household waste — so throwing a few bags of kitchen rubbish on top of a load of demolition debris does not convert it to a free household load. It converts the whole thing to a paid one.

Every load must be tarped or covered. An uncovered load is charged at 200% of the gate fee, which turns a routine trip into an expensive one for the sake of a tarp and four bungees.

On the way out, residents can take free wood chips and mulch — a genuine perk if you are landscaping.
