This is the permanent household hazardous waste site for Greenville and for Hunt County generally, and it costs nothing to use if you qualify. Residents of the participating Hunt County cities and of the unincorporated parts of the county drop off free of charge. The entrance is on Wright Street rather than off Sockwell Boulevard itself, which catches people out.
It is not open often, so plan around it. Two Tuesdays a month, the first and the third, from 4pm to 7pm; and the fourth Saturday of the month from 8am to noon. Outside those windows the gates are shut. A voucher is issued at 3108 Sockwell on the day itself, and a driver licence is checked at drop-off. If you live in an unincorporated area you also need printed proof of your taxing jurisdiction — a tax statement — that matches the identification you present.
Quantities are capped at five gallons per product, per household, per visit, and chemicals must arrive in their original labelled containers. The two exceptions are used motor oil and cooking oil, which can come in any sealed container. Tyres are limited to five per address or vehicle and must be off the rim.
The list runs to aerosols, spent ammunition cartridges, batteries, cooking oil, drain cleaners, fluorescent tubes and CFLs, fuels, household pesticides and herbicides, cleaners, motor oil and filters, paints, thinners, solvents and stains, pool chemicals, and thermometers. Latex paint does not need to come at all — dry it out and it goes in the household bin. Enquiries: (903) 457-3152.
