Amarillo runs its landfill on a simple split that catches out anyone midway through a project. If you live in the city and you are bringing ordinary household rubbish, there is no charge at all — the sanitation line on your city bill has already covered it.

The exception is the one worth reading twice. Material arising from construction or demolition attracts a landfill fee even when a resident brings it. Remodelling debris, sheetrock, shingles, timber, rock, soil, brick, concrete, carpet, insulation, non-metal garage doors, PVC pipe, vinyl siding, decking and trim all fall into that chargeable category.

Everyone outside the city, along with businesses, landlords and anyone carrying non-residential rubbish, pays regardless of what the load contains. Charges are calculated on the weight delivered, and the scale-house rate is not published — telephone 806-378-6813 for a current figure.

Bring a card. Since March 2024 the site has taken credit and debit only, and cash is refused outright. That change does not affect city residents tipping normal household waste, because they are not paying anything in the first place.

Tyres cannot go in with general rubbish. The landfill may take used tyres for a fee, though capacity limits how many, so ring before loading a trailer of them. Fridges and freezers need a certificate confirming the refrigerant has been removed.

Opening times shift with the season: shorter winter hours from November to March, longer weekday evenings from April through October, and closed every Sunday.
